Sheila's Story

Beginning in February 2022 I started having health issues which I contributed to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, being tired from working too many hours and continuing effects of Covid which I had in October 2021. In April 2022 I had what I thought was a virus. After taking three rounds of antibiotics and not getting completely well on June 18th I starting throwing up along having with diarrhea. My husband rushed me to the emergency. A CT scan showed a large mass centered in the pelvis along with small spots on my liver, spleen & lungs. My CA 125 marker was 711.5. I also had pockets in my stomach filled with fluid. A needle biopsy was drawn from the ovary. One liter of fluid was drawn from my stomach but they were unable to remove the fluid from the pockets. They also removed 1.23 liters of fluid from my right lung. I was transferred by ambulance to the cancer floor at UT Hospital. We met with my new oncologist who discussed with us the diagnosis of stage four Ovarian Cancer and the treatment plan going forward. I received the first cycle of chemo the following Monday while still in the hospital. They administered two drugs, CARBOplatin & Taxol. In three weeks I received the second cycle of CARBOplatin and Taxol along with Avastin which is an immunotherapy drug. These three drugs were administered every three weeks till I had received six treatment cycles. My oncologist then performed a complete hysterectomy followed by two more chemotherapy treatment cycles. In February of 2023 we received the good news that a CT scan showed that I had gone into remission. I then started an oral immunotherapy drug Lynparza. The Avastin had to be stopped due to causing high blood pressure. In late August 2023 I was hospitalized and received 3 blood transfusions due to a very low hemoglobin level. At this time the Lynparza was stopped so that my hemoglobin level could return to normal on its own without the need for additional transfusions. In March 2024 my CA 125 marker began to slowly rise, a CT scan was then ordered by my oncologist. The results of the scan showed cancer had returned. After discussing with our oncologist his recommended treatment plan, I then underwent six cycles of the chemotherapy drug Doxil. The treatments were administered every four weeks. A recent CT scan result indicates that the tumor is still there however it has not grown and no new growths have appeared. We will be taking 8 weeks off from treatments then I will go for another CT scan to see where we are at that point. We will at that time meet with our oncologist to discuss the results of the scan and his treatment plan going forward. I has been quite the Journey and we will keep fighting. We are so thankful for all of our friends and family who have stood by our side since this cancer diagnosis. We are also grateful for TN in Teal and their continued efforts providing education as to the signs of this invasive cancer and offering support to those who are survivors as well as those who are continuing their fight.

We would love for you to share your story.
